GRISELDA
ANTONIO VIVALDI

ENSEMBLE MATHEUS / JEAN-CHRISTOPHE SPINOSI

(2006, Naïve)

Dramma per musica in tre atti – Libretto di Apostolo Zeno Teatro S. Samuele, Venezia, 1735.

Premiered in 1735 in the most prestigious theater in Venice, Griselda is the 'apotheosis' opera. With this mature work, in a libretto revised by Goldoni, Vivaldi is reconciled with the singer Anna Girò, his most famous pupil, and conquer the Venetian elite. In this context, the story of Queen Griselda, despised by her subjects because of her modest origins but earning their love and loyalty through courage and endurance, finds a very special resonance.
